NATURAL GAS PIPE SIZE CLICK HERE FOR THE QUICK COUPLER PAGE OK IN VAPOR GAS SIZE DOES MATTER! BIGGER IS BETTER FOR SURE. ALWAYS GO THE NEXT SIZE LARGER . ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Typical Natural Gas & Low Pressure Propane Installation note: most gens are 125k btu and larger at rated power. On Lp systems use 3 regulators a high pressure to med pressure, med pressure to 10 wc, and a demand regulator. On natural gas systems test check the pressure to make sure you are at 6 - 10 wc pressure. note: on NG some systems line pressure is 1.0 or 2.0 psi or higher to compensate for small Id of the feed lines and require a pressure regulator at each point of use appliance. All generator vapor gas conversions (even the tri-fuels) are for natural gas and low pressure propane. These can use both fuels because they use the same low pressure demand engine regulator. The honda tri fuel engine demand regulator installed will accept up to 14″ of water column maximum or .5 psi. This allows it to be used for both natural gas (4″-8″wc) and low pressure propane (11″-14″wc). The same engine demand regulator can be used for both fuels that is also why they are installed on the tri-fuel generators.(28″ water column is equal to about 1 PSI of pressure ) Due to these relatively low pressures, larger pipe sizes are required to handle the fuel demand. For instance, a 1/2″ pipe coming directly from a natural gas meter could not be over 10′ long and handle the volume of a generator over 6hp. So having the 3/4″ pipe at the opposite end of a home will need to be just off a larger main pipe line. For instance, if a gas grill 35k btu outlet is stubbed out the 1/2″ pipe would need to be fairly close to the main 3/4″ or 1″ gas line. This is a very common hook-up request and if the overall and stub out pipe is sufficiently sized removal of the 3/8″ gas grill quick disconnect and shut off would be necessary. Install a 3/4″ tee and reinstall the grill outlet parts on one side and a new 1/2″ quick disconnect (QDC-12) and shut off valve on the other. If no properly sized outlet is available, the generator may have to be connected right after the meter or low pressure regulator. The chart below is a reference guide to help determine the correct pipe size if teeing in at the outlet side of the meter. (Note: This is a guide only. Qualified personnel should calculate exact requirements.) Always go the next size up from any calculations.Remember to safe purge the air out of the gas lines and hoses before use! and use water and trash drop tube just before the point of use shut off valve.
Pipe size (inches) Based on Distance in feet from Meter , remember each T or 90 deg fitting subtracts 3 foot of pipe.
BTU consumption chart based on generator/engine size and load
Natural gas is billed in THERMS. This represents a unit or block of 100,000 btu of fuel. A generator engine running at 3600 rpm under full load consumes on average about 10,000 btu per horsepower per hour. Using these figures, we can figure the estimated usage for any size engine. For instance a 13hp engine used on a 7000 watt generator running at FULL load should use no more than 130,000 btu per hour and cost approximately $2.50 to operate. 50% load (3500 watts output average) should use no more than 60,500 btu per hour and cost approximately $1.60 to operate. To compare that to gasoline (110,000 btu per gallon) times the cost by 1.1 to arrive at $2.75 per gallon. So if you are paying over $4.00 per gallon for gasoline, you can save by using natural gas.
And you do not have to deal with the gasoline going bad and trashing the carb! just make sure to drain the tank, hoses, and the carb bowl of gasoline and leave the carb as dry.
and make sure to use a large load block on top of the demand regulator this helps on the fine tune mix of the vapor gas.
